Three-year-old Megan wasn’t her usual ebullient self when her parents picked her up from preschool. The car door was hardly shut when she dissolved into tears. “Taylor is having a birthday party and I’m not invited.” She cried as if her heart would break.

There’s something different about the invitation Jesus sends. Everyone is included. “Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.”

In The United Methodist Church, the sacrament of Holy Communion is open to all believers. “Fbr where two or three are gathered in my name,” Jesus told his disciples, “I am there among them” (Matthew 18:20). As we celebrate Holy Communion in a variety of settings—local churches, college campuses, retreat centers—we unite with our sisters and brothers around the world.
